Panel work

I have been working on new pieces for my show at Venus on the Half Shell. Some of my new garments have panel  work. Here is an idea of what I have been up to.
I have been making crop tops with matching skirts.

This is a skirt I am currently working on.

These are crop tops I am currently working on. As you can see the left top matches the skirt above. I like the idea of wearing them together or as seperates.

I am also working on a few dresses.

This is a sneak peak of what I am going to cut tonight. Purple velvet paired with vintage floral fabric!!!

Stay tuned for more pieces, and I hope you can make it to my show!!

Flyer Preparation

I am having a holiday show at Venus on the Half Shell December 6th.  I like to make an event flyer for every show to get as many people to come out as possible. A lot of work went into this flyer, here is what I did.

I decided I wanted the flyer to be very festive, so I made a Christmas dress.  I had to cut three layers of this dress since the gold fabric was see through.

I had to hand sew the gold fabric layer to an under layer to treat as one piece.

I then sewed the two pieces together so that the bodice would be lined.

this is a photo of the two pieces before I sewed them together.

I then gathered a skirt to sew to the bodice with red velvet fabric.

Voila! A Holiday dress.

I decided I wanted to have a few accessories to photograph for the flyer. I thought I would make some slippers and a matching eye-mask to make the photo even more festive.

I chose some fuzzy fabric for the lining and red and pink pin striped for the main fabric.

Here are my shapeless yet very cozy slippers :)

Then I had to set up where I wanted to take the photo. I decided to hang some of my hoops to add a little more detail.

Heres where I decided to set up.

I am adjusting my eye mask and looking silly, but I actually like how this photo came out and am going to use it for my flyer.

After making my friend Darian take a lot of pictures, this ended up being one of my favorites.

So now that I have the photo done, my talented sister Liz can make my flyer. Stay tuned, and I hope you can make it out to the event!!!

October Activities

There are a lot of cool events happening this October locally. Here are some events that I am participating in.

This Saturday, October 4th, Venus on the Half Shell is hosting an art show for Kevin Good.

Kevin is a local artist and barista at Cafe Nola in downtown Frederick. I am very fond of his work, if you are local you should definitely check out his opening.

Also, this weekend, me and a few friends are participating in the 72 hour Film Fest.
I am very excited to participate in this event. Stay tuned for our film, we have 72 hours to film and edit. The premier will be next weekend at The Weinberg Center in downtown Frederick.

I've also been getting ready for my show at Bottle of Bread in Baltimore. I'm promoting only new things, so I have been sewing a lot. If you are local to the Baltimore area you should come see my new garments.

(Above: a few new skirts I have been working on)

Also, my friends at Classic Electric are celebrating their ten year anniversary of being open. They will be partying all weekend with booze, food, art and bands. The after party will be at Cafe Nola.  You for sure don't want to miss this one!!

Also, at the end of the month, Sunday October 26th, Venus on the Half Shell is hosting our semi-anual VERY VINTAGE YARDSALE at Dublin Roasters !!!!

I scored this awesome top a few years ago at the yard-sale for 5 bucks!!! The event is from 12-3, make sure you check it out!!!

I hope you make it out to these awesome events this month.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Today is my day off and I have been running errands and trying to get things together for my upcoming show at Bottle of Bread in Baltimore.  Its going to be a small show featuring only new items I have made.  Here is what I have been working on.

I took this photo years ago and decided I wanted to re-create it but with a dress I have made and use the image for my flyer.

It was actually a lot harder then I thought to re-create. At first I tried to do it myself with a self camera, but that was not working, so I got my sister Molly to help me out.

I decided to go with this photo for my flyer. Hopefully I will have that done this evening, stay tuned!

I also added seven garments to my Etsy shop today. You should check them out!!

Now I need to get some serious sewing done for my show! Stay tuned for new pieces, and my flyer!!

Kimono

Sometimes I like to do projects I can complete really easily when I have had a stressful busy day and am not in the mood to sew for hours but still want to make something. Last night I made a kimono. It was super easy and fast! Here's what I did....

I took my measurements and drew a quick sketch.

Then I picked the fabric I wanted to use and drew my template directly on the fabric. I think finding the right fabric was the hardest part, this fabric my friend brought me back from India. It is super sheer and drapes nicely for a kimono.

I then cut it the template out and cut down just one layer on top for center front.
I then sewed the sides and shoulder and hemmed the bottom and center front to neck opening. I didn't have to hem the sleeves because the way I folded my fabric the sleeves ended on the selvage end and will not fray.

Here's my finished kimono!

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. It was so easy! You should try and make one too!!!

Etsy Photo Shoot

Today I took some photos of my friend Morgan for my Etsy shop.  I also took a few rolls of film for fun. Here are a few photos that I took on my phone.

Morgan in a floral gathered dress I made. I used vintage fabric. I love the lower back.

Here is a front view of the dress.

This dress is also made with vintage fabric.

We played around with this tea kettle I have on my porch.

This is a high waisted skirt and crop top I made.

This dress I made for my birthday, but I actually decided to try and sell it. I love it but I think its one of my better pieces and I would love for someone to rock it!

I'm really excited to see how my film turned out. It has been awhile since I have shot 35mm. I am going to add these five garments to my etsy shop tomorrow! Stay tuned!

Works in progress

This week I've been all over the place and have started a lot of projects. Here is what I have been up to.

I made my friend a custom bag. We have left over fabric so I'm going to also make her a make up bag and a pillow.
Extra fabric.
Make up bag in progress.

I decided I wanted to make a simple coat. I'm using this pattern.

I cut the pieces last night.
I also started cutting and sewing some new baby outfits.
This is what happens when you can't decide what you want to work on and start three or so projects at once...
Disaster studio!!

My goal is to get these projects done this week!!
